Campus

Date back to 8th century a.d. thanks to the birth of the famous Scuola Medica Salernitana, which retained its importance throughout the middle ages, the vocation of Salerno for studies. In addition to the teaching of medicine in Salerno were  also study of philosophy, theology and law. After the second half of the 9th century, with the establishment of the Lombard Principality of Salerno, you can place the birth of an institution that played the function of training and graduating for the doctors, assuming a centuries-old path that connects the greco-roman antiquities to the lombard age and Salerno has  the chronological primacy like the oldest european university settlement. The activities of study in Salerno, that lasted for centuries, are suppressed shortly after the unification of Italy in 1865 when was closed the Royal High School, who became gymnasium “Torquato Tasso”. This was because the government of Savoy of the newborn kingdom of Italy expand its academic organization to all pre-unity states, and naturally also the different university system of the former Kingdom of the two Sicilies had to be completely reformed and conformed to the new national policies. You will have to wait nearly a century to have resurrected a university in Salerno. Date back to 1944 the establishment of a private college of education in the city that become public  in 1968. After the first faculty of education within a few years are born the faculty of literatures and philosophy, economics, mathematics, physics and natural sciences, law, engineering, pharmacy, political science, foreign languages and literatures, medicine and surgery, dentistry.  For dimensions today is the third university in Italy and I’s one of the few in Italy to have the structure of campus, with 1,200,000 square meters extension. According to the ranking published by Il sole 24 ore, the University of Salerno  is the best university of the south Italy.
